Research Unit  

The Border Medical Oncology Research Unit has been operating since 1998 and is a non-profit organisation.  Our research is centred on clinical studies for cancer patients and our main aim is to make clinical research studies available in the local area.  In the past, patients had to travel to the major city centres to access these national and international oncology studies.  This often meant that they either didn’t access the studies, or were inconvenienced and away from their family and friends for extended periods of time. 

At Border Medical Oncology we are involved with a variety of clinical research studies that cover many different types of cancers.  The studies are initiated by study groups (such as the International Breast Cancer Trials Group, the Australian Gastrointestinal Trials Group and the Gynaecology Oncology Group amongst others), and by pharmaceutical companies who are developing new drugs.  The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the FDA or the Joint Hospitals Ethics Committee can audit these studies at any time and all studies are run strictly in line with Good Clinical Research Practice Guidelines, have the Joint Hospitals Ethics Committee approval, and where applicable, have TGA approval.
